Services

I provide a variety of services to meet the academic needs of students in Kindergarten through college, and communication needs of adult English Language Learners and/or those seeking assistance with business communication development. Along the way, I also positively affect self esteem and confidence.

As an experienced teacher and academic mentor, I have regularly created and implemented individualized learning plans/customized lessons that concentrate on students’ specific needs. I use a variety of research-based, proven strategies to successfully reach the visual, tactile, and/or auditory learner. For children and teens, my teaching objectives are aligned with your child’s specific needs and California’s Grade-Level Standards.

My services range from assessing your child’s strengths and needs to assisting him or her with understanding and completing  assignments; developing organizational, research, and writing skills; and remedying specific reading, writing, and/or math challenges. I can also help students successfully complete class projects and prepare for high school exit exams and college entrance exams.

· Assessments

Knowing a student’s current skill level and grade-level standards  is critical to achieving academic success. It’s equally important to know what assessments to use. I use multiple, authentic measures that are research-based and highly regarded for evaluating phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, vocabulary usage, and reading comprehension. For elementary school students, I also use common, widely used math assessments, which are determined by your child’s age and grade level.

In addition to assessing elementary school students prior to providing tutoring services, I provide independent assessment services for parents seeking an independent analysis of reading language arts skills without ongoing tutoring services. For more information about the types of assessments I conduct, please visit my Top 10 FAQs page. Additional services I provide are listed below:

· Reading Support and Intervention

As a credentialed K-12 multiple-subject teacher and experienced elementary school teacher, I am intimately familiar with the developmental stages of reading, writing and spelling and how they are connected. My teaching experience has also given me first-hand experience with helping students move from one stage to the next, gradually releasing responsibility to them so they become independently successful. I have taught students to learn to read (primary grades) and read to learn (upper elementary grades). My reading instruction is direct, explicit, and systematic.

· Writing Instruction

In addition to writing professionally since 1989, I have taught writing at a variety of levels from Kindergarten through college and beyond. I can assist students and adults in understanding the writing process and producing successful work for their appropriate grade level or business goal. Specifically, I can help students with organization of information, story development, content, writing style, and grammar for all types of writing including the following: story summaries, responses to text, book and informational reports, personal narratives, and critical analyses.

Good writing skills are essential for making progress in both our personal and professional lives, and it’s important that children and teens begin developing those skills now!

· Essay Development

As a professional writer, editor, and credentialed multiple-subject teacher, I am uniquely qualified to teach writing to students of all ages. I can assist high school and college students with research, organization of information, story development, content, writing style, and grammar for all types of writing from reports to narratives and critical analyses.

· Math Remediation

I love math as much as I enjoy all other subjects, which is why I earned a multiple-subject (versus a single-subject) teaching credential. I have taught math from the Kindergarten-level through high school trigonometry. For elementary school students, I use a variety of manipulatives (physical items for counting, making patterns, etc.) when I teach math and reinforce math skills.

· Homework Support

Does your child simply need homework assistance? I am available to provide support as needed for homework assignments and re-teach skills in areas where your child “just doesn’t get it.”

· Project Development

Does your child feel overwhelmed when it comes to projects? I can help him or her narrow the focus, devise plans, and set goals for successfully completing projects.

· Test Preparation

Having taken many exams, including standardized tests, in my lifetime, and, as an adult having taken classes for preparing me to succeed in them, I can assist students in this area. Test-taking skills are learned, and I have put into practice strategies that work.

For test prep services, you will need to provide materials; the types of materials needed will depend on the tests your child is taking.
